Understanding the D Amara (Celtic Minor) handpan scale
Amara's timeless selection of notes allows you to create sounds recalling earlier times through perfect fifths and fourths. An instrument like this might have found a place in spiritual ceremonies among the Celts. Unlike the complete Aeolian mode, its sixth degree is absent, giving the scale a more open character. Beautiful harmonies are especially easy to play in the upper register. It is one of the most popular handpan scales.
Amara/Celtic Minor is characterised by the perfect fifth between the ding and the first note (for example D–A). This opens up the tonal space and provides context for the higher notes. The next note sits a minor third above that fifth, recalling the natural harmonic series. Two whole steps follow, then a semitone, another two whole steps and finally a minor-third leap to the highest note, due to the missing sixth degree (for example B-flat in D Celtic Minor).
The scale sounds particularly archaic because it supports many perfect intervals—fifths, fourths and octaves—which were already used in medieval music.
The arrangement offers another distinctive feature: in the D Celtic Minor example, the notes on the right form a D minor triad (A–D–F–A), while the notes on the left form a C major triad (C–E–G–C), one whole tone below the tonic. This makes it easy to create a major-key impression while playing harmonically. Little wonder that this is among the most widespread handpan scales.
Possible note sequences
9-note sequence: D/ A C D E F G A C
11-note sequence: D/ (F G) A C D E F G A C

Questions & answers when buying a handpan:
Reference to manual work on our Handpan instruments
Our handpans are elaborately crafted by hand. Even though our handpans are made with the utmost care and craftsmanship, natural differences in color, slight variations in design and minimal manufacturing marks, such as fine scratches or unevenness on the tone fields and the sound body, may occur.
Visible hammer marks, which are caused by the precise tuning of the instrument by hand, are characteristic features of handmade handpans. They are evidence of authentic craftsmanship and do not represent a quality defect. On the contrary, they emphasize the uniqueness of each instrument.
