About the Yugen Handpans:

Yūgen handpans have several distinct characteristics. The first thing that stands out as optical properties is the coppery color of the special alloy and the fact that it is shaped like a double step. The sound is balanced and powerful. The well-balanced sustain makes a versatile playing style possible. The instruments made of stainless steel resonate for a long time without making percussive and faster playing difficult. In terms of playing feel, the Yūgen handpans are somewhere between the most spherical stainless steel models from other manufacturers and handpans made of nitrided steel. In terms of sound, they bring a very special, light growl into the game and also enable percussive effects. The tones are absolutely clean and very easy to play

NEW: Mini / Traveler Handpan

Our mini handpans are much smaller and more manageable than the standard models. Anyone who has difficulty with the standard sizes will feel more comfortable with a mini handpan. The mini handpans are also particularly suitable for small people and children. If you would like to travel with your handpan, the Mini Traveler Handpan is an easy-care and undemanding companion. Traveling with a Traveler Handpan is easier, more pleasant and just plain fun - we know what we're talking about :D

About the handpan manufacturer

The Japanese word Yūgen stands for the subtle and profound. The principle of Yūgen: Expressing feelings and thoughts with a few words, brush strokes or sounds that cannot be said or shown.

In this sense, the Yūgen handpans are visually simple and are characterized by a clear and balanced sound. which open up a deeper sound world than they appear at first glance.
The Yūgen handpans are manufactured in several different tunings as well as in both frequencies 440Hz and 432Hz.

Diameter: 43cm
Height: 25cm
Weight: approx. 2.5
Material: stainless steel

Mood name : Celtic Minor
Synonym : Amara
Basic tone sequence 8+1: C#/ G# ABC# D# EF# G#
Atmosphere : Melancholic-archaic-medieval
Mode : Minor - Aeolian
Tone supply : hexatonic

Semitones: 7-3-2-2-1-2-2-3

Tonal center: DING

Mood description:

With this everlasting tone selection (Amara) you can easily conjure up sounds that are reminiscent of bygone times through perfect fifths and fourths. This instrument might have found its place in spiritual ceremonies in Celtic times. Compared to the full Aeolian mode, the sixth stage is not present here, making this tuning a little more open. You can play very nice harmonies, especially in the upper range. This is one of the most popular tunings in the handpan world.

Characteristic of Amara/Celtic Minor is the jump from the DING to the first tone in the interval of a perfect fifth (example DA). This fifth jump immediately opens up the tonal space and gives context to the notes above. The next tone is a minor third above the fifth, which is again reminiscent of the natural tone series. From here there are two whole-tone steps, a half-tone step, two whole-tone steps and the jump from the minor third to the highest tone of the tuning, which results from the absence of the sixth degree (example D Celtic Minor: tone Bb).

This tuning sounds particularly archaic because many pure intervals (fifth, fourth, octave) that were already used in the Middle Ages can be played.

Another special feature arises from the arrangement of the tones: In the example D Celtic Minor, the tones on the right side form the triad of the fundamental tone, in this case D minor (ADFA). On the left side, however, all the tones of the major triad are one tone below the fundamental, i.e. C major (CEGC). When playing harmoniously, the sound impression of a major key can be easily represented. It is not for nothing that it is probably the most common handpan tuning.

Questions & answers when buying a handpan:

Reference to manual work on our Handpan instruments

Our handpans are elaborately crafted by hand. Even though our handpans are made with the utmost care and craftsmanship, natural differences in color, slight variations in design and minimal manufacturing marks, such as fine scratches or unevenness on the tone fields and the sound body, may occur.

Visible hammer marks, which are caused by the precise tuning of the instrument by hand, are characteristic features of handmade handpans. They are evidence of authentic craftsmanship and do not represent a quality defect. On the contrary, they emphasize the uniqueness of each instrument.
