Mood name : LaSirena
Basic note sequence : F#3/ C# D# EF# G# AC#
Atmosphere: Enchanting - Seductive - Tempting
Tonal center: DING or 1st note
Mode: Lydian (tonal center 1st note) - major or Dorian (tonal center: DING) - minor
Tone range: Hexatonic
Semitones: 3 - 4 - 2 - 1 - 2 - 2 - 1 - 3
Mood description:
The mermaid (La Sirena) attracts with her incomparable song, with which she not only captivates sailors. This scale sounds very special, what else would you expect from this name? It does not want to commit itself to the sound atmosphere of two different church scales. If you set the first note as your tonal center, this pan will sing for you in angelic tones of the Lydian mode. This mode sounds even brighter than the Ionian mode (major) because it has a raised 4th degree (example La Sirena in C: the note A in relation to the note Eb /cf. Sabye).
However, if you choose the DING as the focal point for your musical phrases, the mermaid's voice will feel covered by a grayish veil of mist as you switch to the Dorian mode (minor).
This makes the atmosphere very exciting and is perfect for explorers who are not afraid of being drawn into the mermaid's magical spell.
From the ding to the first note there is a jump of a minor third, from here to the second note a major third, so that a minor triad can already be expressed with the lowest notes. From the fifth note the scale progresses step by step, except that the second note in the scale (with the tonal center on the first note) is not present, making the pan a hexatonic.
Possible tone sequences:
With 8 tone fields: F#3/ C# D# EF# G# AC#
With 9 tone fields: F#3/ C# D# EF# G# A (B) C#
With 10 tone fields: F#3/ (AB) C# D# EF# G# AC#
With 11 pitches: F#3/ (AB) C# D# EF# G# A (B) C#
With 12 tone fields: F#3/ (AB) C# D# EF# G# A (B) C# D#
* Bottom notes are additional tone fields on the bottom of the handpan and are written in round brackets e.g. (DE).
Mutant handpans have additional notes on the upper shell in the second row - between the chorus and the root note. Mutant notes are written in curly brackets, e.g. {DE}.
