Description of the D Kurd handpan scale
The Kurd tuning can be regarded as the natural-minor variation among handpan scales. Its particularly harmonious arrangement of notes makes it especially suitable for beginners. It supports everything from calm, meditative and melancholic passages to powerful and joyful playing.
Although this scale can sound deeply sentimental, cheerful musical impressions are also possible. Major triads can be formed starting on the second and third notes. Playing those two notes simultaneously creates tension; you can also use this tension deliberately to enhance the subsequent release.
Kurd was one of the earliest seven-note scales tuned into handpans and became widely known through numerous viral videos online.
Origins and music theory of the Kurd handpan scale
Kurd takes its name from the Arabic/Turkish maqam Kurd. When the tonal centre is considered to be the first note of the circle, the sequence follows a Phrygian mode, distinguished by a semitone between the first and second scale degrees. This interval contributes to the scale’s mysterious sound.
There is, however, an ambiguity: the ding sits a perfect fifth below the first note and acts as a second tonal centre, shifting the perception to Aeolian (natural minor). Depending on how you play, you can alternate between a natural-minor and a Phrygian character, from calm and meditative to melancholic, powerful or joyful.
Like other minor variations (such as Celtic Minor or Integral), Kurd features a perfect-fifth leap from the ding to the first note. With the ding as tonal centre, the subsequent notes provide the steps of a natural minor (Aeolian) scale. Kurd's distinctive feature is the semitone between the first and second notes, also found in the maqam Kurd (compare Semai Kurd) and the Phrygian mode. Phrygian sounds are used in jazz, psychedelic rock, flamenco, fado and classical music.

Questions & answers when buying a handpan:
Reference to manual work on our Handpan instruments
Our handpans are elaborately crafted by hand. Even though our handpans are made with the utmost care and craftsmanship, natural differences in color, slight variations in design and minimal manufacturing marks, such as fine scratches or unevenness on the tone fields and the sound body, may occur.
Visible hammer marks, which are caused by the precise tuning of the instrument by hand, are characteristic features of handmade handpans. They are evidence of authentic craftsmanship and do not represent a quality defect. On the contrary, they emphasize the uniqueness of each instrument.
