Sometimes there are these magical moments in life. They don't happen often, but when they do, you never forget them.
We, my husband Daniel and I, experienced this magical moment when we heard the sounds of a completely unknown instrument for the very first time.
Almost exactly 10 years ago, during the Night of Museums in Düsseldorf, we wanted to visit a small church in the heart of Düsseldorf. We heard the handpan player from a distance and felt deeply moved by the sounds of this wonderful instrument. We sat down on the steps in front of the church and were in a daze. It was explained to us that the instrument is called "Hang", is only made in Switzerland and you can't just buy it. Instead, you had to write a letter and be lucky enough to be chosen by Felix and Sabina. For fear of not being chosen, we buried our desire for our own instrument for the time being. Nevertheless, the longing for a handpan kept coming back and we kept watching videos of all those who had one. Years later, a personal stroke of fate made me realize that this instrument had never let go of me and that the time had come to put my wish into action. Because life can be short and if I had never had the opportunity to play the handpan myself, I would have deeply regretted it.
Suddenly we realized that it was no longer impossible to find a handpan and that a large number of enthusiastic handpan players had decided to build their own handpans.
Our journey began and we became owners of a wonderful Ayasa in D-Minor.
Since that day, our handpan has been part of our family life. Our children come to rest and even our dog lies down at the feet of me or my husband. Playing a handpan can be completely intuitive and you don't need an understanding of sheet music or music theory.
As long as you share the enthusiasm for the instrument, don't give up and keep at it, you will be rewarded with a new world of sounds...
